The desert transhumance across the National park and natural reserve
This expedition marks the first transhumance of the year, as we move our horses from the Vashlovani area located at the very south far east of Georgia, where they have spent the last four winter months, to the Udabno semi-desert. Over nearly 260 km, you take part in a true horseback migration, riding alongside horses moving freely.
The journey crosses the far eastern edge of Vashlovani National Park toward Udabno and David Gareja area, home to some of the oldest monasteries in Georgia. Along the way, we ride through the spectacular Shiraki and Shashuna natural reserves, a remote region shared with semi-nomadic shepherds and their herds.
This 6-day horseback expedition offers ever-changing landscapes: vast open plains, multicolored canyons reminiscent of mini Badlands, a large lake where we set a stunning wilderness camp, abandoned Soviet villages and collective farms, and long stretches perfect for exhilarating gallops.
Wildlife is abundant, with frequent sightings of tortoises, birds of prey, foxes, and more.
This is a journey far from tourist routes, an immersive and demanding adventure for riders seeking authenticity, freedom, and a deep connection with nature.
Finally we ride our adorable Tush mountains horses a local bred from the Caucasus Mountains living free all over the year:)
